I’m so excited to introduce you to Jackie Philip, a UK-based painter who travels to work and teach. Her paintings have a vibrant simplicity that will serve to uplift any working and healing environment.
Beyond the Studio
“I flew to Barbados in September intending to visit for 3 weeks and ended up staying 7months due to Lockdown and the fallout from the volcanic eruption of La Soufriere on nearby St Vincent. This unplanned change of events became a fortuitous opportunity to set up a temporary painting studio in Barbados – an open verandah surrounded by trees and water and away from all distractions.”
“I came to observe and appreciate the Abundance of Nature in all its forms, from the tiniest dragonflies hovering over the pool to the birds, fruit, flowers, and magnificent Mahogany trees to the expansive canopy of stars and moonlight overhead.”
“This, in turn, has filtered into my paintings which have become more expansive and filled with luminosity and color, a rich tapestry of greens and blues interwoven with tropical orange and pinks.”
“The images are informed by a variety of cultures and traditions such as the Celebration of Nature in Asian screens and lacquerware whereby multiple layers of paint are used to intensify the color and Symbology.”

About Jackie Philip
Jackie Philip's paintings have a spontaneity that captures a moment in time - the essence of a place or the ephemeral color of wildflowers recently gathered from the shoreline.
Her subject matter is transformed by the intensity of her color combinations, often juxtaposing or layering complementary colors to create a 'sensory vibration'. While working with raw pigment mixed with oil onto canvas, she creates a rich tapestry of color & luminosity of light.
Work and Travel
While living & painting in Edinburgh Jackie spends time traveling in search of new challenges & inspiration for her paintings. She has received many prestigious awards including the British Institute Fund, the Italian Government Scholarship & the Tigh Alisdair Ruaraidh Residency that introduced her to the Hebridean islands. Further afield, her travels have taken her to Asia where the colors & culture of the east have influenced her paintings and simplicity of composition.
Since completing her post-graduate studies at the Royal Academy Schools, London, Jackie has been painting full time as a professional artist and lectured in London, Florence, and Auckland.
